Blue Flax

$2.99 USD

Seed Count: Approx. 200 seeds

Days to Maturity: Perennial

Description: Blue Flax, is a wildflower in the genus Linum, which is the true source of the fibers that were woven together to make linen fabrics.  Not only is it a great source for fabric fibers, but the seeds are also very nutritious.  This fast growing, early bloomer has stems that can grow up to 30 inches tall.  It produces lovely, vibrant, 1 inch, light blue flowers with dark blue veins that bloom from May-September.  The blooms only last a day, but there will be lots of blooms to replace them the next day.  They open early, just before dawn, and unless it is overcast, they will drop their petals by midday.  Birds, and butterflies love these flowers, and seeds, so that's an added bonus.

It is best when flax is planted in mass, in loose, dry, well draining soil, and in full sun, but it can tolerate partial shade.  Blue Flax will easily reseed itself, so if you do not want reoccurring blooms, then you should deadhead the plants.  Since it is a perennial, it may not flower during the first year of its growth.  Tolerates dry sandy soils very well.  Can be grown in zones 3-10.
